Killer Croc on the
Loose in San Pedro
There’s a man eating
crocodile on San
Pedro. The croc is one of many that lives in the lagoons at the back.
And police say it’s one of those crocs that killed 22-year-old Wilber
Blanco in the earning morning of 15th September. Blanco had been
partying, was drunk, and somehow ended up in a creek in the San Pedrito
area. That’s where a croc tore off his two arms, and caused him to die
by bleeding to death. Now the Forestry Department has been called in to
catch that man eating croc.
George Hanson from the Forestry
Department led a two man team which worked in San Pedro on Wednesday
and Thursday to catch the croc. They came close on a number of
occasions but in the end, they did not get him.
This footage courtesy the San Pedro Sun,
shows a local, who regularly feeds the crocs, trying to assist with the
effort to capture him. This capture attempt was for a croc that
regularly appears in front of the Banyan Bay Hotel. The Forestry Team
has said it will return to San Pedro next week with a proper trap. Read

Corruption
Perception Index
International
watchdog agency, Transparency International (TI), has released this
year’s Corruption Perception Index, which rates 179 countries across
the world on a scale of 0 to 10 – 0 being the most corrupt and 10 being
the least. Within a year, Belize has slipped from a rating of 3.5 to
3.0, and from #66 to #99 among the rated countries.
The Transparency
International
Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries in terms of the degree to
which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and
politicians, the agency said. It added that the composite index (a poll
of polls) draws on corruption-related data from expert and business
surveys by independent and reputable institutions, and reflects views
from around the world, including those of experts who are living in the
countries evaluated.
While countries such as
Costa Rica,
Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Dominica, Italy, FYR Macedonia, Romania
and Suriname were noted for their improvements in the CPI this year,
Belize was listed along with Austria, Bahrain, Bhutan, Jordan, Laos,
Macao, Malta, Mauritius, Oman, Papua New Guinea and Thailand as
“countries with a significant worsening in perceived levels of
corruption in 2007.”
In the region of the
Americas,
Belize ranks 21 among 32 countries, tied with the Dominican Republic
and ranked ahead of only Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala, Guyana,
Nicaragua, Honduras, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Haiti. Canada
ranks first in the region, while the US ranks second. Barbados was
highest among CARICOM countries with a rating of 6.9.
“The top scores of
wealthy
countries and territories, largely in Europe, East Asia and North
America, reflect their relatively clean public sectors, enabled by
political stability, well-established conflict of interest and freedom
of information regulations and a civil society free to exercise
oversight,” TI’s report said.
It noted, however, that
corruption
in poor countries has an international dimension and bribe money often
stems from multinationals based in the world’s richest countries and is
often tied to international trade ventures.
“In the Americas,
the
anti-corruption fight remains far from being victorious. A third of the
countries scored below three, indicating that corruption is perceived
as rampant. Slightly more than two-fifths scored between 3 and 5
indicating that the levels of corruption among public officials and
politicians are perceived to be serious by country experts and business
people,” said TI’s report issued on Wednesday.
In 2003, Belize’s index
was 4.5,
and it has regressed over the years, to 3.8 in 2004, 3.7 in 2005, 3.5
in 2006 and now 3.0 in 2007. Read

CARICOM
to facilitate One-Day Seminars on Solar Energy
The
business community and hoteliers in Belize will benefit from two
one-day seminars on effective use of solar energy to be facilitated by
the Caribbean Regional Energy Development Programme (CREDP) of the
CARICOM Secretariat on 3-4 October, 2007 at the Radisson Fort George
Hotel and Marina in Belize City.
CREDP facilitators will seek to introduce hoteliers to the benefits of
using solar water heaters for their properties; introduce the Belize
business community to CARICOM region solar water heater manufacturers
and explore business opportunities for the sale of solar water heaters
in Belize.
Organised in tandem with the Belize Hotel Association and the Belize
Trade and Investment Development Service, CREDP is also facilitating
solar water heater manufacturers from Barbados, Dominica and St. Lucia
to travel to Belize to participate in the Seminars.
The first seminar on October 3, titled Market Opportunities for Solar
Water Heaters in Belize will see participants from the business
community benefiting from several presentations by solar water heater
manufacturers as well as from a presentation by University of the West
Indies Professor Dr. I. Haraksingh, who will Introduce them to the use
of Solar Water Heating and Solar Energy.
The second seminar on October 4 titled Solar Water Heaters and the
Hotel Sector will engage local hoteliers in presentations and
discussions from solar water heater manufacturers on the benefits to be
gained from using solar heating in their hotels.
The opening ceremony will be addressed by Dr. Roland Clarke, Project
Manager, CREDP. Read More
POLICE
DEPARTMENT SPEAKS OUT AGAINST ALLEGED MISCONDUCT
AND UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR
A
release from the Police Department states the
Commissioner of Police has listened very keenly to the recent alleged
misconduct and unprofessional behavior which have been aired on the
various media outlets. The release says the Commissioner assures
the
public that once a report is received of police misconduct and
unprofessional behavior, including the use of excessive force, those
complaints will be properly investigated and where proven, those
officers will be dealt with in accordance with the law. A
testament
of this commitment can be seen in the recent cases where police
officers were charged criminally for alleged wrongful acts. The
Police Department says while it respects the public’s right to air
complaints via the various media outlets, these publicly aired
complaints are not sufficient. There is the need for formal complaints
as police officers, like the general public, are entitled to due
process in accordance with the rules of natural justice. Members
of
the public who are alleging police misconduct are asked to come forward
and make formal complaints which will be investigated fairly and
impartially. Complaints in the Districts can be made to the
Commanding Officers at the head Station. Read
