Death By Croc Attack in San
Pedro

Last night we told you about the
mysterious death of a well-known waiter in San Pedro. 22-year-old
Wilber Blanco’s body was found near a creek on Sunday morning with his
two of his arms missing. His family says its murder but a post mortem
conducted yesterday certified that he was the victim of a crocodile
attack. Police forensic examiner, Dr. Mario Estradabran found that the
crocodile amputated the two upper limbs, which left Blanco to bleed to
death. A terrible accident and it should be case closed but there are
nagging questions and suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Keith Swift went looking for answers.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This picture of 22-year-old Wilber Blanco was taken just hours before
he died. It was taken at a pirate party in San Pedro Yown. Wilber –
seen here in his pirate costume - was reportedly drinking heavily. The
last time he was seen alive was when he left the party.
Olinda Garcia, Mother of Deceased
“They were at a masquerade party all dressed up as
pirates after it ended they stayed to give the prize to the best
dressed person. After that they were happy, having fun and he became
drunk. They put him in a taxi, a taxi he’s never used before because he
had taxi men who would always pick him up even if it was 2 or three in
the morning they would take him to my house. They put him in that taxi
and the person driving that car took a boat off the island early on the
following morning.”
Wilber Blanco never made it home to his
house in the DFC area of San Pedro and that’s when his family called
police. His partially nude body was found in this lake on the opposite
side of San Pedro – the San Pedrito. His arms were missing. A police
report says it was crocodile syndrome but his family says it was murder.
Edwin Blanco, Brother of Deceased
“The police are saying that it’s probably the
alligators which is a story that’s hard to believe because why would
the alligator take only two hands. It is strange, it’s really hard. To
be sincere, I am still in shock.”
And now this grieving mother wants
justice.
Olinda Garcia,
“I only want justice to be done because my son never
got into problems with anyone. Everyone envied him but I don’t know
why. He did not get involved with anyone. He was always trying to avoid
problems. Even with that there was still people who hated him. I just
want justice to be done because things happen in San Pedro and other
parts of the country and people forget those who die. My son should not
have died the way he died. He did not deserve to die like that. If they
wanted to kill him they did not have to torture him the way they did. I
just want justice, I just want justice…my son’s blood is asking for
justice.”
And while it’s been ruled as
death by croc attack, police say their investigations continue. Read

Guatemalan
Beauty Queens
Colonizing Belize?
She is called Miss Ecology and
this year 12 women want the crown. It’s a Guatemalan pageant with
Guatemalan contestants but it’s on the news in Belize because the
contestants spent the last two days here. Their first stop was San
Pedro and yesterday they visited Cahal Pech in Cayo. We met them
yesterday and spoke to pageant coordinator Edgar Castellanos and
reigning Miss Ecology Michelle Taylor -who actually went to school in
Belize.
Edgar Castellanos,
Coordinator
“This event is to promote
the ecology of Peten. We have
twelve ladies that are going to participate in this pageant and we got
the twelve towns of Peten so that they compete and they will have like
four crowns and they will get like each a crown. We came to Belize to
meet all of you and to know your ecology because Guatemala and Belize
are very important for this.”
Keith Swift,
You said four queens
will be chosen. Explain that.
Edgar Castellanos,
“The four crowns are for
Miss Ecology and I got the
crown for Miss Ecology for Peten and then I went to Guatemala to
participate with all the districts and I got the crown for Miss Ecology
national and we have Miss Image, Queen of Tourism, and Miss Teen.”
Michelle Taylor,
Reigning Miss
Ecology
“I have visited a lot of
places. I studied here in
Belize in Benque Viejo Del Carmen High School and I graduated from
Belize so for me Miss Ecology has been a big pleasure. I went to the
sea to see dolphins and turtles in Guatemala and a lot of people don’t
that so its very important for us to tell you Belizeans that we have a
lot of pretty things too and you can visit us always.”
The winner will
represent Flores,
Peten in Guatemala’s national Miss Ecology Pageant. Read

Taking Stock
Belize at the quarter century mark; that
was
last year, but it’s still an important milestone because so much has
changed since 1981. And now, a comprehensive new book by Cubola
Productions offers that quarter century stocktaking that wasn’t
available last year. 13 eminent academics and researchers have
contributed to the 330 page volume called: taking stock Belize at 25
years of independence. Joseph Palacio is one of the editors and he told
us why it’s important.
Dr. Joe Palacio,
“Each author was given a
free rein. What we were
looking for is you are the expert in coastal communities, on the health
of the reef, on the environment, on the economy – look at what has
happened in the past 25 years and give us your perspective. That makes
it a scholarly effort all around.
The whole area of academic
freedom, in fact as an
academic myself within a developing society like Belize, should be
permitted to express what I think is the fact of the case. We in Belize
don’t get this opportunity enough and so this book has provided that
opportunity for us to look at ourselves, examine ourselves, and say
this is it and to provide opportunity for others to say you were wrong
and then the debate continues.”
Among those contributing
essays are Dr. Jaime
Awe, attorney Antonette Moore, and environmentalist Candy Gonzalez.
