American Imports
The US Embassy in Belize, and
the American Chamber of Commerce
Belize today officially opened the annual Made in the USA Exhibit at
the Radisson.
The event showcases American
products, services, and investments in
Belize, while offering an opportunity for Belizean consumers and the
business community to sample American made products. It also provides a
forum for making contacts in establishing potential business
partnerships. The Exhibit has attracted participation from some of
Belize's major distributors and retailers of American goods. However,
the number of display booths are down this year, and the US Embassy's
Political and Economic Section Chief, Joseph Boski, says the recession
might have something to do with that.
Joseph Boski, Chief -
Political and Economic Section - US
Embassy
"There is a little drop off but I think the reason....everyone knows there is a global economic recession from 2009 and I think it impacted especially the real estate business more than other businesses and so I think that's probably the sector that's a little anxious not just in Belize but all around the world participating in trade shows." Jim McFadzean "How is this event is supposed to separate itself from the Annual Belize Chamber of Commerce Expo that they do every year?"
Joseph Boski, Chief -
Political and Economic Section - US
Embassy
"Our event is more tailor made to either US businesses - business owned by Americans or just as importantly Belizean businesses that used some kind of US import or a product or franchise in their business. So we have a much tailored group of exhibitors." Jim McFadzean "The exhibition is supposed to target who?"
Joseph Boski, Chief -
Political and Economic Section
"The exhibition is for everyone. So if you are watching this, come on down. Its free, it's at the Radisson Hotel. It's all day on Saturday from 9am - 6pm. I hope the weather will be good, so be safe and don't come if it's not safe to come but I am hoping that we will have good weather on Saturday and that everyone can come down. There are lots of small giveaways at all the different booths. There are some items for sale - some high quality items and a lot of good information as well including information about the US Embassy at our booth." The United States is listed as one of Belize's largest trading partners, accounting for more than a third of Belizean imports and exports. The two day Trade Exhibit on the 5th Floor of the Radisson Villa Wing will end tomorrow at 5pm, weather permitting. CH7 National
Assembly Goes
Electronic, Sort Of
Earlier this week we told you about a
website where you could listen
to the entire proceedings of a special sitting of the Caribbean Court
of Justice held via teleconference between the CCJ headquarters in Port
of Spain Trinidad and a Supreme courtroom in Belize City. To our
knowledge, that is the first time an electronic recording of any court
session held in Belize has been made publicly available.
And now, a
new website for the National Assembly of Belize makes
sittings of the House and Senate widely available. Now, those are
broadcasted and publicized ad naseum- so it's not as precious as the
recording of a CCJ session, but for students, researchers and those who
love to hear those classic uncut performances like Marcel Cardona's
again and again, the site should have all that on its archives.
Regrettably only the 2010 archives are posted right now.
It also has minutes from committee meetings and information on the
functions of the house, the standing orders and the customs of
parliament.
The site is www.nationalassembly.gov.bz CH7 Caribbean Broadcasting Union holds 42nd
Annual
General Assembly The Caribbean Broadcasting
Union (CBU), formed in 1970 with a vision
of stimulating the flow of broadcast material among the Radio and
Television systems in the Caribbean region, held opening ceremonies for
its 42nd Annual General Meeting on Wednesday August 17th at 9:30am at
the conference room at Coco Beach on Ambergris Caye.
CBU reaches over 4.8 million people in the Caribbean and millions of others extra-regionally. As a regional institution, it facilitates discussion and analysis that assist in policy formulation on major integration issues. The member territories and associate member territories of the CBU include Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, France, French Guyana, Germany, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, the Netherlands, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, United States and the US Virgin Islands. Media personnel from across the Caribbean gathered at Coco Beach here on Ambergris Caye for the three day General Assembly and one fun day schedule. Master of Ceremonies for the event was Mr. Patrick Cazier, Secretary General for CBU, while Great Belize Television’s CEO Ms. Amalia Mai administered the welcome address. This was followed by a very informative address by President of CBU, Mr. Vic Fernandez, during which he stressed on the ignorance of CARICOM (Caribbean Community) leaders as it pertains to the many accomplishments of CBU, as well as their lack of financial assistance to the CBU from heads of Governments of CARICOM. He also spoke on the importance of maintaining politics and journalism separate, while touching on responsible journalism – the importance of facts as oppose to opinion. This was followed by Keynote Address by Hon Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize, who offered to be the messenger in relaying the message from the CBU to leaders of CARICOM states. As the ceremony continued, two individuals were newly inducted into the CBU Hall of Fame. This induction recognizes extraordinary contribution and a consistency of excellence. Recipients Mr. J. A. Lester Spaulding of RJR Communications Group in Jamaica and Stewart Krohn, over 35 years of service in Belize, extensive work as a pioneer of Belizean programs. Presenting the citations was Honorable Prime Minister, Dean Barrow. The CBU actively organizes training programs for management, programming, marketing and engineering personnel. Over the following days, the members of the Assembly will participate in presentations and discussions on Digital Transitioning in the Caribbean as well as other issues affecting the CBU.
