Tigersharks are the 2007
Basketball Champs!

For the
first time in San Pedro sports history, the TigerSharks brought home
the semi-pro championship title to the island by clinching their
historic championship berth with an emphatic 79-68 win over the Belize
Bank Bulldogs at the hardwood of the Belize Civic Center on Friday
night. The game was a decisive game three in the best of three
championship series and the winner would take it all. It is the first
time in
sport history that a San Pedro team has won a “semi-pro” title in any
sport.
Congratulations to the TigerSharks for an impressive season and for
bringing home the championship title to San Pedro. Kudos to Coach Gary
Isaacson and Manager/Assistant Coach Rico Black for their excellence.
Viva TigerSharks, let’s do it again next year!! Read More

ANDREWS ANALYZES THE ECONOMIST
INTELLIGENCE
UNITED'S REPORT ON BELIZE
The
Economist Intelligence United based in London has published a country
economic report on Belize. According to Andrews
the reports forecasts a slow down on the Gross Domestic Product in the
next fiscal year.Andrews says that the
report forecasts a rise of the
deficit to four point eight one percent because of spending on projects
that were not budgeted for. This outcome will result in poor fiscal
performance. This in turn will not only affect Belize locally
but
also internationally.Not everything is
bad news according to Andrews since
the report says that the main factor to cause an increase in G.D.P is
the new oil industry.
The report also
highlights the unemployment rate that
dropped from eleven percent in 2005 to nine point six percent in
2006.The Economist Intelligence Unit provides an annual economy report
on several countries based on statistical figures gathered from the
country. Read

Special
Olympians prepare for international event
Despite
the
warm weather the children who will be representing Belize
in the upcoming Central American Games for Students with Disabilities
in Guatemala City and the Special Olympics World Summer Games in
Shanghai, China, were out at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex getting
ready for the competition.
Atkintade Atkens,
National Director, SOBz
“Give them the sports
fitness and to further divide them
into the
various competitions that they will be competing in when they go to
this particular event later this year. Also, what we are looking at is
to build a team spirit among the two teams that will be going to
Guatemala and China. As you would have noticed, both competitions will
be coming up at the same time, so we are trying to build a spirit of
oneness between those that will be going to Guatemala and the ones that
will be going to China.”
Forty-five students
between the ages of eight and thirteen are expected
to compete in both major events, which officially start on September
twenty-sixth.
Akintade Atkens
“The overall and general
vision of Special Olympics is
to bring
persons with disabilities, wherever they are in Belize, into the
general society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected
and given the opportunities to become useful and productive citizens.”
It is the third time
that Special Olympics Belize will be sending a
team to the international games and the second time the students will
be competing regionally. Due to a lack of financial support, SOBz was
not able to send any teams to the past two previous events; however
positive response to the 2007 Games has made these children’s dreams
come true. Read More
