Police Crack Down on Isla Bonita Ne’er-do
wells

Assistant Commissioner of
Police Crispin Jefferies Sr. along
with Senior Superintendent of Police and Acting Officer in Charge of
Eastern
Division today paid a visit to the Ambergris Caye, San Pedro
Town. While in San Pedro, the two Officers along with Officer
Commanding San Pedro ASP Humberto Pott held meetings with members of
the
business community as well as local Police Officers.
In keeping
with a promise by the
Commissioner, Acp Jeffries announced that two new senior officers will
be
posted to the island as well as a number of other Special Constables
recruited. While in San Pedro, ACP Jeffries
toured a number of trouble
spots and listened to concerns of residents and business persons from
the
area. Among the concerns raised was the
fact loitering seems to be on the increase and that drugs continue to
be a
problem for the area. The Police
promised more vigilance in targeting the drug infested areas and an
increase in
patrols and Police Community Programs.
The meeting was held from 10 to noon
with the business
people and ACP Jeffries met with Police Officers in the afternoon.
All seemed satisfied that the Police were
doing all possible and necessary to address the present problems that
exist.
The meeting was attended by some ten business persons as
well as the Mayor Miss Elsa Paz, area representative Manuel Heredia and
PUP
Standard bearer, Mel Spain. Read

Mother Delivers
Triplets in
San Pedro & Belize City
Last month a Belize City
mother
made news when she delivered a set of triplets at the KHMH. Well
yesterday it was triple the joy again for another mother, this one from
San Pedro. Alba Baeza’s triplets were 6 weeks premature but they
weren’t all born at the same hospital or in the same town. Here’s why.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This is triplet number one. At 3 pounds 9 ounces, he was born at 5:08
am on Monday at the Lion’s Clinic in San Pedro Town. These are his twin
brothers: triplets number 2 and 3. At 3 pounds 15 ounces and 3 pounds
14 ounces respectively, they were born 1 and a half hours later – not
in San Pedro but in Belize City. Jose Baeza is the proud father.
Jose Baeza, Father of
Triplets
“Yesterday morning my
wife had pain, about 4 in the
morning, I took her to the doctor and she had lot of pain and she
delivered a baby yesterday at about 8 past 5 in the morning. The doctor
said it was complicated so we went to the chopper and the chopper took
us to Karl Heusner. The doctor took her to the special room to cut her,
to have the two more babies.”
The triplets are the first children for
33-year-old Jose Baeza and his wife Alba Jimenez Baeza who is also 33.
Keith Swift,
When did you find out that your wife was having triplets?
Jose Baeza,
“When she was two months
pregnant we went to check the
doctor and the doctor told us it was two. So we checked the doctor
again and he told us it is not two, it is three. I was surprised; 3
babies in one. I told my wife that is the way God wants it so we are
good with it.”
Keith Swift,
Is this it for your family? Are you going to have more kids?
Jose Baeza,
“I already told the
doctor to cut her so she can’t have
any more.”
Triplet number has already been named
after his father. No names have been chosen for the other two baby boys.
Again the triplets were born
prematurely. They are in the special care unit at the KHMH. Their
prognosis is good. We should stress that the triplets are Alba
Jimenez’s first children. Read

U.S. Military
Vessel Stuck in
Belize's Waters
A very reliable seafarer
contacted 7NEWS this afternoon to tell us that a military
vessel was grounded on the reef northeast of Foreman’s Caye. His report
was that when he and his crew saw the vessel in distress, they went to
investigate, but were driven away by military personnel onboard who
pulled firearms.
But this evening, an official source confirmed to us that the Belize
Coast Guard has boarded the vessel – which is an American military
transport ship. The official source says it is anchored some 3 miles
from a reef formation near the Drowned Caye Range and the Coast Guard
is satisfied that it had not been on the reef. That’s an important
note, because one theory has been that because the military vessels
travel in pairs, one may have pulled the other off the reef. The
official source says that the U.S. vessel experienced engine trouble
and broke down while on its way to Honduras. It is headed there to
participate in a New Horizons Exercise.
Our understanding is that the engine
problems are substantial and they expect it to remain anchored at least
overnight. Read

B.T.L.
awards scholarships for high school students
These
twenty-one students hailing from all over the country earned
scholarships to the institution of their choice through B.T.L.’s high
school scholarship programme. It’s an opportunity that twelve year-old
Toledo student, Brandon Vasquez, says will save his family a huge
expense.
Brandon Vasquez,
scholarship recipient
“It had helped me a lot.”
Marion Ali
“In what way, why do you say that?”
Brandon Vasquez,
scholarship recipient
“Because my mom is a single parent.”
Marion Ali
“What do you want to study at high school and which high school are you
going?”
Brandon Vasquez
“I would want to study in business and I’m going to
T.C.C.”
Director at B.T.L., Ediberto Tesucum, says the process by which the
students are selected is straightforward.
Ediberto Tesucum,
Director, BTL
“We have a selection committee that looks at all the
applications.
What they look at is the grade system of the students, their needs.
They look at the salaries for parents and so on. The whole process
itself is to try to help deserving students who are qualified or who
qualify to get these scholarships.” Read More
