Belize on alert to maintain foot and mouth
disease-free status
Following an official
declaration of a recurrence of Foot and Mouth
Disease (FMD) in England in a beef farm in Surrey, the Belize
government is taking appropriate preventative measures, including a ban
on animal exports from the UK as well as meat and dairy products.
The 2001 FMD crisis in the United Kingdom indirectly affected Belize
because of the erroneous concept held by officials in Central America
and Mexico that Belize is a “Little England”. Thus, these countries
considered Belize a high risk country for FMD and effectively closed
their borders to importations of live cattle and cattle products from
Belize.
The Ministry of Agriculture and BAHA will enforce
regulations especially in the Commercial Free Zone areas to assure
neighboring countries and trading partners that we are taking
appropriate preventative actions.
Belize recently requested
the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) for recognition as
officially free of FMD without vaccination and it is expected that it
would be recognised as such by the end of August 2007. Read More
Free textbooks distributed to schools
The first stage of
government’s free textbook programme is in full
swing as the first shipment of school supplies arrived in Belize
earlier this week.
Judy Diego, Manager, District Education Centre
“It has been a lot, a lot, a lot of planning. I plan
when I sleep, I
plan when I wake up, just for the process to be smooth. And I must say
that I have a wonderful staff working here, I have wonderful
facilitators over at the training, and we are going smoothly. I must
say thanks to all of them.”
For the past two days, the staff at the Belize District
Education
Centre have been busy receiving and processing its supply of the text
books that will be distributed free of cost to primary school children
in September.
Judy Diego, Manager, District Education Centre
“The books came in last week and the containers were
emptied at the
Belize Elementary’s auditorium, that is really the hub, and the books
were distributed from there to the districts.”
On Thursday the Belize district received its supply of seventeen
thousand eight hundred and twenty textbooks in five subject areas:
Language Arts, Mathematics, Spanish, Social Studies, and Science. Six
processing clerks have been hired to prepare the books for distribution
to primary schools. For accountability, each book will be stamped with
a number, the name of the school and student. Read More
Butane
prices up $3 in second increase in 2 months
In news about another
type of energy, the government has announced a
three dollar increase in the price of butane. The new retail rate for a
hundred pound cylinder is one hundred and five dollars in Belize City,
Belmopan one hundred and seven, while in San Ignacio it’s one hundred
and ten bucks. Customers in Benque will pay one hundred and eleven
dollars; in Orange Walk the price is one hundred and six; Corozal one
hundred and five. In the south, butane will sell for a hundred and
seven dollars in Dangriga and one hundred and eight dollars in Punta
Gorda. This spike comes on the heels of another increase which occurred
on June thirteenth when butane went up by four dollars. The new prices
took effect on Thursday. Read More

Six
Caribbean national Red Cross societies for HIV global alliance
The
HIV Global Alliance is an enabling framework to mobilize capacities
and resources to provide harmonized, effective support to National
Societies for the achievement of their HIV programmes within the
framework of the Federation’s Global Agenda.
The Global
Alliance offers a structure by which the Global Agenda Goals and the
Millennium Development Goals can be achieved collectively and
efficiently.
“While the Red Cross is independent, impartial and
neutral by way of
its fundamental principles, we also acknowledge that we cannot work in
isolation and so we would continue to operate within the established
systems,” noted Kapila.
The other national societies from the
Caribbean that have been targeted to participate in the Global Alliance
are Belize, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti and Trinidad &
Tobago.
The Alliance also includes Asia, Europe and Africa
which have been selected by the International Federation as other
priority regions for the implementation of the programme. Read More

THOUGHT
OF THE DAY
The
most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the
source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a
stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is
as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
