BELIZE CELEBRATES
WORLD RANGER DAY
Belize joins the rest of
the world in
celebrating,
for the first time, World Ranger Day. Publicity Coordinator, Dirk
Francisco says many people do not recognize the work that rangers are
tasked with. Hence, Belize Audubon feels the need to salute them on
this day.
Dirk Francisco:Publicity
Coordinator of
the Belize Audubon Society
“Today
is the day when the Belize Audubon wants to recognize all rangers in
Belize for their dedicated work in ensuring the management and
protection of Belize’s natural resources.Rangers are guys who do all
kinds of activities in a protected area. They are the ones who would
work with communities everyday. They are the ones who face illegal
hunters, you name it,they are the frontline personnel.A lot of people
don’t recognize the significance and the tremendous amount of work that
a ranger carries out everyday. So this is one of the main reasons why
Belize Audubon Society along with other non-governmental and
governmental organizations are recognizing today’s first celebration as
World Ranger Day.”
The
Maya Mountain Ranger Association will also be hosting a special
launching at three o’clock this afternoon at the Log Cab-Inn in San
Ignacio, Cayo. One of Audubon’s own has been selected to speak at the
launch.
Dirk Francisco:Publicity
Coordinator of
the Belize Audubon Society
“Mr.
Ignacio,a ranger at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary for over 30
years, has been chosen to be the guest speaker at the launching of the
Mayan Mountain Range Association at the Log Cabin in Cayo District.”
Publicity Coordinator of
the Belize
Audubon Society, Dirk Francisco.
"The
Belize Audubon also recently received a grant from their Costa Rican
social partner, AVINA. According to Executive Director, Anna Dominguez
Hoare, the purpose is to improve its membership."
Anna Dominguez
Hoare:Executive Director
of the Belize Audubon Society
“We
will be working on our membership system.Belize Audubon Society is a
membership organization that’s comprised of both national and
international individuals. We have been conducting several activities
for our membership because we believe that our membership is very, very
important in supporting conservation work in Belize and so we just
received a grant through Urbina, one of our social partners and they
will be providing funding to attain a computerized system that will
improve our networking with our membership. We will also be doing a lot
more activities for the members and so we hope to have members become
far more active during the implementation of this project. We will be
having trips to the protected areas that the Belize Audubon Society
manages. And so we will be inviting different stakeholders as well as
members to participate in these trips and it will be free of cost
because this project will essentially be providing those resources for
us to do.We will be doing a lot more awareness and communication as to
the work of the Belize Audubon Society in terms of conservation. We
would definitely invite our membership to become more involved reaching
out in the next year to the members to definitely become more active.”
The
cost of the project is about seventy-five thousand dollars. Thus far,
the Belize Audubon has a membership of one thousand seven hundred at
various levels. The Belize Audubon is inviting anyone who is interested
in becoming a member to contact their office. Read

U-N-F Coordinator,
Doctor Beddy
Flimpchun speaks on the history of the relationship between the two
universities.
Doctor Beddy Flimpchun:U-N-F Coordinator
“This
partnership begins way back in 1996,the partnership for the Master’s
program and we graduated 63 in 1998 in that first program for
principals and since that time,we’ve had a Master’s program here.We
came again in 2002 and we’ve been here since that time and we have
close to 300 graduates from the program and they’re in lots of
wonderful positions in Belize and I’m very pleased about the rise that
they have made and that each one has been promoting and leading
education in Belize now for almost a decade. Those young educators who
have graduated from our program,so we’re very proud of them.”
Doctor
Flimpchun says the hoods that graduates will receive come free of cost
here in Belize but are at a cost of one hundred fifty dollars for
students at U-N-F. Representatives from the different cohorts will be
making presentations at the ceremony. Recognition will also be given to
Belizean students who graduated from U-N-F this past May. The ceremony
starts at seven p-m sharp and ends at nine o’clock. Read

Improved Vital Statistics
Management
The
Ministry of Health
and the Attorney General’s Ministry today signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a Vital Registration Process.
This endeavor is for the
purpose of improving and strengthening the
vital registration system, for births and deaths. This mechanism would
result in an integrated vital registration system that will improve the
timeliness, reliability and accuracy of national indicators and reduce
data redundancy.
Registration of births
and deaths is a major concern nationally since
data from this process is used to monitor key social, economic and
political aspects of a country. Vital Registration in Belize is
fundamental for the planning of resource allocation and services to be
provided to the population, whether by the public system or by the
private sector.
The signing today will
enhance the quality of registration of all
births and deaths reported and increase the coverage and vital
information produces as it relates to vital statistics. Read More
