Our Belize Community:
Eli Pearly

The San Pedro Costa Maya
Festival initially started as the Sea and Air
Festival, a festival which aimed to bring Central American countries
together and enjoy camaraderie at its best. The culture exchange, as
well as the traditions passed on, is priceless. Having people from all
walks of life enjoy Belize to its fullest for a full week of planned
activities was the initiative of a handful of people. One such person
involved is someone we proudly honor in the week’s Our Belize
Community. Not only was she instrumental in assisting with the
inception of the Costa Maya Festival but of the change in wedding laws
in Belize. Because of that change, destination weddings are a big boom
in our small island. We present Eli Pearly.
A major deterrent in having destination weddings in Belize was the
British Law which required either the bride or groom to be in the
country 15 days prior to having a wedding license granted to them. Eli
wrote a proposal and after receiving a phone call from Kevin Gonzalez
agreed that three days was enough time to be in the country before the
license could be granted. “In those days, destination wedding were not
as big as they are now. It only made sense to make the most of it. To
have one or both members in the country fifteen days before was not
working. After writing the proposal I am glad that government agreed
with me and had the laws changed, she explained.
Today, Eli
remains with the Paz family and works managing the Banyan Bay Bottom
Time Dive Shop as well as the Banyan Bay Gift Shop. Aside from running
the day-to-day activities of both shops, Eli loves spending time with
her two grandchildren, Lauren (10) and Casandra (6) and her loving
partner Vidal Castillo.
Eli has fallen in love with San Pedro’s beauty and peace and has
enjoyed pushing the island forward. With great assistance and hard
work, she has initiated two of the big tourism movements in the country
of Belize. Eli Pearly has made this island her home, her love, her
passion and strives to keep moving “Our Belize Community
forward. Read More
Belize
at the center
Few countries, regardless of size, can
boast an archaeological heritage
as rich as the Belizean archeological heritage, and this week,
archaeological experts whose specialty is in the Maya civilization
gathered at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts in Belize City for
three stimulating days to compare notes on the latest discoveries and
developments. It
is the
fifth year of the Symposium and it brought together close
to two dozen scientists from all over the world who have done research
at various sites across the country in Belize.
Jaime Awe, Director of
the Institute of Archaeology,
told Reporter
the annual symposium is not only an opportunity for Belizeans to become
familiar with their roots, but it is also a companion piece to the
ongoing programme for the introduction of Mayan and African studies to
the school system.
“The current state of
archaeology in Belize is that it
is dynamic,
and we are at the forefront of research on the Mayas, further than
anywhere else in the world.
Belize has contributed
incredible information to our
knowledge about
the Mayas. There is not a single book I know about that is published on
the Maya that does not make reference to or does not include
information that comes from Belize.
That information,
according to Awe, continues to be
updated almost
on a daily basis since the most recent find three weeks ago of a
500-year-old post-classic Maya ceramic art piece, known as centfish.
Centifish, displays the
image of a fish and a centipede
when
combined, was discovered just a few feet below the surface at the
Lamanai Ruin in the Orange Walk district.
With so much talk on
the importance of these sites and
artifacts,
keynote speaker Francis Fonseca took the opportunity to applaud the
archaeological staff for its work in making the symposium such a
fascinating reality. He re-assure the public that there are no plans to
privatise or commercially exploit any part of Belize’s historical Maya
heritage.
The Institute of
Archaeology in Belmopan is responsible
for the
management of archaeological exploration countrywide. It monitors all
ongoing projects in Belize and dispenses all permits for site work. The
Institute also manages all archaeological parks and reserves, including
visitors’ centers. Read More
Special training for
some of Police ablest
They have been trained in personnel
management,
financial (white
collar) crimes, gun smuggling and human trafficking, and now eleven
senior police officers return to Belize to share their expertise and
spread the good work.
Last Saturday the
Belize Police Department
welcomed back eleven of its brightest who had gone to San Salvador for
special training.
It was a six week
course which gave them the skills and
knowledge
needed to function well in key areas of police work -areas such as
Personnel management, white collar crime crimes, human trafficking and
gun smuggling.
They left on May 20,
and were accompanied back to Belize
by Deputy
Commissioner of Police, Maureen Leslie, who had flown to San Salvador
the capital, for their graduation.
“These officers will
now be able to pass on what they
have learned
to other officers declared Assistant Superintendent Sandra Bodden,
Commandant of the Police Training Academy, who herself was one of the
trainees.
“Some of the training
will be taught to new recruits as
well officers who have been with the department for some time.
“We now have a better
understanding of the crimes and
criminal activities affecting Belize and we can act more vigilantly.
