“Fein-a-Lee” wins 3rd annual Dia
de San Pedro fishing tournament!

The
big winners proudly show off
their giant haul!
Fein-a-Lee” captained by
Sean Feinstein was the top boat in this year’s
3rd Annual Dia de San Pedro Fishing Tournament that was held last
weekend June 30th to July 1st. On Saturday, a myriad of boats lined the
docks ready and eagerly awaiting for the clock to strike six marking
the start of the Tournament. Saturday was day one of the competition,
on Sunday it culminated with the official weigh in on the beach by
Ambergris Divers. Sunshine and warm temperatures were popular in demand
which allowed over 75 participants to take advantage of a beautiful
summer day outdoors for some good fishing.
Winning
2nd place in the
tournament, Andre Perez and his crew
claim their prize. Perez also took the Calcutta prize of $4,230
At the end of day two,
hundreds of people waited for the boats to come in and stood in awe as
they watched the anglers bring out their catch for weigh in. Party
goers enjoyed an afternoon beach party and gala buffet at the Caliente
beachfront whilst being entertained by Barry & The Islanders. Read More
B.B.
Holdings is nation’s most
profitable company
Which company in Belize is the nation's most profitable? If you guessed
B.T.L. you'd be wrong. If you guessed B.E.L. you'd be warmer but still
wrong. The correct answer is B.B. Holdings. That's the parent company
of the Belize Bank, and its latest annual report is showing a
twenty-six point eight percent increase in net income to forty-five
point four million U.S. dollars. That's a shade under ninety-one
million Belize. According to the report, the Belize Bank dominates the
country's banking industry, boasting a forty-five percent market share
of all loans. The company's financial services profits come from three
entities: The Belize Bank Limited operating domestically, Belize Bank
International working in the offshore sector; and Belize Bank Turks and
Caicos, which serves domestic and international clients from that
British colony near the Bahamas. B.B. Holdings also owns a twenty-four
percent stake in NUMAR, a Costa Rican based producer of edible oils.
Even if you subtract the nine point seven million U.S. credited from
NUMAR's profits and the ten point eight attributable to the Turks and
Caicos operation, you still wind up with a purely local profit of
forty-nine point eight million Belize dollars, far ahead of B.E.L.'s
twenty-six point one and B.T.L.'s twenty-three point one million. Read More
Making Small &
Micro-Enterprises Competitive & Profitable

500 small and micro-enterprises will
benefit from a project aimed at improving their competitiveness in the
tourism industry. The project focuses on those businesses which cater
to cruise tourism and through training and technical assistance, it is
hoped they will improve profitability and quality as well as
competitiveness and the overall product. Deanna Peyrefitte is the
coordinator and she says the project is in the assessment phase.
Deanna Peyrefitte,
"What we're looking at doing is improving
competitiveness of our micro and small enterprises and improving the
quality of goods and services, goods produced and services offered."
Keith Swift,
How has the project been going?
Deanna Peyrefitte,
"Its been going well. We were in the ground laying part
for quite a while so now we're ready to move into our training and
technical assistance aspect of the project which is why we are doing
the publicity campaign to get more information out about the project
because people have been asking, they have heard things here and there
but they haven't really gotten a full information so now we're doing a
publicity campaign which will take us into the month of August and
September is when our training should start.
What we're hoping to accomplish is
better products made by our micro and small enterprise so that when our
tourists come, they appreciate what is made here and they buy more of
what is made here and just so that we have stuff that is comparable to
what is made in other destinations that cruise ships stop at so that
when tourists come here, they spend more money here. So it will improve
the overall profitability for SMEs as well as the quality of what is
offered in our country."
About three hundred of the businesses
participating in the project will receive training and 150 of those
will receive technical assistance. A logo competition will be shortly. Read

NOTICES/LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
From a resort owner on the Placencia
Peninsula:
We just
had 3 lengths of
about 300' each,
3/O cable stolen. New this is worth about $9000.
This was taken out of a 2"
pipe, not an easy job.
For those not familiar,
this is not a couple guys, this cable is extremely heavy and pulling it
through 300' of pipe and then it would be impossible to carry.
Do we have contractors
stealing now?
If anyone is doing new
construction and this cable sounds familiar, please call the police or
us at 523-3010
#####
From Caye Caulker:
Mein, theives stole all the
hammocks off the decks of Aux Sweetz
last nite, and on the eve of the Minister's stay with all her family no
less.
Had to be scrambling around looking for new hammocks
today. The
ones that got stolen all had metal hooks which last longer than the
nylon hooks alone, especially in this rainy weather.
We couldn't
find
any with metal hooks on the island today.
I
asked my manager to report it to the police and she said that some
rookie police at the station told her she needed to know who took it
before he could take her report. Talk about pendejo. I asked her
to go
back and DEMAND that he take her report.
Not sure how that
panned out
as I have not been updated.
If anyone knows
the whereabouts of my colorful hammocks with metal hooks I would like
them back. They cost me $150 bucks each. Five went missing.
