Dia De San Pedro 2007

Fireworks
blazed and lighted up the warm night’s skies at the Old Football Field
in celebration of the Dia de San Pedro festivities. The annual event is
a celebration held in honor of our Patron Saint Peter. It also
celebrates all of the past accomplishments that we have achieved as a
community and is time of reflection for the future achievements. It is
a two part weekend, one the religious aspect and two the happy side to
any festival. Read More
Archaeologists gather to share theories,
discoveries
 On
a
per capita basis, Belize probably contains the remains of more
ancient communities than any place on earth. Yet, despite the abundance
of sites and their steadily growing stream of visitors, the science of
archaeology has never really captured the imagination of most
Belizeans. As archaeologists from around the world gather at the Bliss,
News Five's Janelle Chanona looks at the latest theories and
discoveries.
Janelle Chanona, Reporting
For the past four years, archaeologists working in Belize have met
annually to share their findings with each other and the public.
This year’s discussions, to be held over the next three days, will
focus on the Post Classic Maya Culture. That was the period when the
ancient civilisation was undergoing dramatic changes in its system of
governance. Some archaeologists believe that following uprisings by the
masses, dictatorship by the royals was replaced by a loose form of
democracy. But around that same time, the Spanish arrived in the New
World and the conquistadors were determined to convert the Maya to
Christianity. That conversion was not always smooth as archaeologists
continue to unearth evidence of a rebellion against the new religion.
Dr. Jaime Awe, Director, Institute of Archaeology
“These are all post classic period objects and it’s just
amazing to
find these things, because it gives you a sense of their, not just the
art, it’s a magnificent pieces of art but also their belief systems.
And also the fact that they were located next to a Christian church
makes it even more interesting. The Maya kept fighting right to the
bitter end.”
Three weeks ago, Director of the Institute of Archaeology, Dr. Jaime
Awe found what he and his team have dubbed the “Centi-Fish” because the
images carved into the clay are believed to be half centipede, half cat
fish. Inside the mouth, the artist depicts a man emerging from within.
The ceramic figurine is the second such artefact to be found at
Lamanai: the first was half crocodile, half shark. Read More
ELECTIONS AND
BOUNDARIES
TWO MONTH DEADLINE
Registered voters who
have moved to a new
division and have
not transferred to their new area, or people who have not re-registered
since the Elections and Boundaries conducted their redistricting
exercise have only two months in which to do so to be able to vote in
their current area in the next General Elections. Assistant
Chief
Elections Officer, Karen Samuels, says the deadline to transfer to or
re-register in your new area is August 31.
Karen Samuels:Assistant
Chief
Elections Officer
“ What happens is that they
have two months out of the year that they
can transfer from one division to another one. They must be in that area
at least two months before that time. When you come in and you say that
you want to transfer from one division to the next you should at least
stay for two months before the month of July.” Read

Heads agree to implement CARICOM travel card
Heads
of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have agreed on
the implementation of a CARICOM travel card that will be issued to
every CARICOM national except those on the Community’s watch list.
This agreement came out of negotiations at the ongoing 28th CARICOM
Heads of Government Summit being held in Barbados.
According
to Barbados’ Deputy Prime Minister Mia Motley, an implementation plan
for the document will be put together and submitted to the Heads at the
next inter-sessional meeting to be held in September.
She
pointed out that the card will virtually maintain the ‘single domestic
space’ and holders will not need a passport, during inter-community
travel.
Guyana's president, Bharrat Jagdeo, said that the
CARICOM travel card is an excellent idea, especially since it will take
away the discretionary powers of the immigration officers.
The
Head of State said with the existing situation, immigration officials
have the authority to determine the duration of a person’s stay in
their country. However, this needs to change to ensure real free
movement of people within the community.
Jagdeo said the card
will allow a CARICOM national to stay a minimum of six months in any
territory, pointing out that it will not affect the security of
countries, as any holder will be deported if he or she breaks the law.
card will feature facial and finger printing biometrics and will be
made available at a cost yet to be determined. The funds acquired from
the card will go towards the CARICOM security architecture. Read More
