Our Belize Community -
Lionel “Chocolate” Heredia

Imagine having a passion for something that throughout the years does not flicker but instead flames up. Imagine working tirelessly through the years, fighting what may seem like an uphill battle, one that subconsciously you may be thinking, “It is not worth it.” Our feature of this week has done just that, his flame burns higher and brighter year after year, and even though it is an uphill battle, it is one that he is willing to fight. Conservation has been a key issue and one that he has valiantly taken up. His efforts were applauded when Swallow Caye was named a Wildlife Sanctuary. This week, we present to you, James Waight Conservation Award winner – Lionel “Chocolate” Heredia.
The Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Minister of Tourism and the Belize Tourism Board was handed to Chocolate on December 5th, 2003. He was described as a man who has displayed much resilience and determination in executing many initiatives that have positively impacted our tourism industry. Chocolate’s signature hospitality has made many tourists return to Belize, just for a chance to interact with him and hear his stories. Chocolate, “rightfully deserved this award for being a humble and passionate man, and is a true stalwart of the tourism industry.”
Founding member of the Caye Caulker Branch of the Belize Tourism Industry Association and of the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association, as well as founding member and past president of the National Association of Specialist and Interpretive Guides, Chocolate also founded Friends of Swallow Caye. This organization won the “Community Based Organization of the Year” for 2006-2007. Read More
Global Warming -
How does it affect Belize?

Many believe that Global Warming is “made up” or that it does not exist. However, scientists argue that there are consistent patterns of warming which include: the increase of surface and tropospheric temperatures, as well as the increase in atmospheric water vapor, glaciers losing ice mass, the Arctic Sea ice extent has decreased, more intense and longer droughts, widespread changes in extreme temperatures and tropical cyclone intensity increasing among others.
“People believe that all of this is happening on the other side of the world. However, they don’t realize that the changes will impact the Caribbean and Belize,” commented Gordon. Expected climate change impacts on the Caribbean includes: Sea level rise, including saltwater intrusion into freshwater aquifers and coastal flooding and erosion; increased temperatures, which will lead to heat stress, coral bleaching, biodiversity loss, increased emergence of vector borne disease and changes in rainfall patterns, resulting in droughts and floods, as well as a decrease freshwater availability.
One of the biggest impacts that global warming will have in the Caribbean is that hurricanes and tropical storms are likely to increase in intensity, this will result in increased mechanical damages and run-offs (sediments, nutrients and other pollutants) to the sea. The Caribbean may also see elevated sea surface temperature and increased coral bleaching incidences, with the possibility that the reef may die off. With the reef gone, livelihoods will be hurt due to the lack of tourism and fishing. “People have to understand that most of Belize exists at or slightly above sea level. Belize is highly prone to sea level rise and flooding,” commented Nadia Bood, Mesoamerican Reef scientist. “There are many developments that fail to realize that the changes that they make to the environment now will impact Belize greatly, among those changes made are the cutting down of the mangroves and the dredging in our waters.” Read More

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
Aromatherapy - Cures for Everyone
by Bibi Chapmam
Hay Fever
This is actually an allergic reaction caused by the pollens of various shrubs, trees and grasses. Symptoms include sneezing, running nose and sore red eyes.  Aromatherapy can ease hay fever, but won't cure it.
Add six drops of hyssop oil to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam.  Alternatively, mix six drops of hyssop oil in 2 fl. oz (50 ml) of carrier oil and massage it into your cheeks and under your nose regularly.
IMPORTANT NOTE:  People prone to epilepsy should avoid hyssop.
