ALL CLEAR
San Pedro is resting easier this morning as Hurricane Dean has passed over. Winds were very strong, the water came up quite a bit on the lagoon side, flooding some streets, but damage is limited to docks and debris, there are no major personal injuries.
Over 10,000 people were evacuated from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker prior to the storm, and about 2,000 remained in shelter for the duration of the hurricane. Intense wave, wind, and rain began late last night and continued til early this morning.
The eye of the storm made landfall near Majahual, a popular port with cruise liners, located about 56 kilometres northeast of Chetumal and the Belize border, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Dean packed winds near 270 km/h and was moving west-northwest near 32 km/h across the Yucatan peninsula, on course to reach by Tuesday evening the southern Bay of Campeche, where state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos decided Monday to shut down production on the offshore rigs that extract most of the nation’s oil.
The hurricane has killed at least 12 people across the Caribbean, picked up strength after brushing Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and became a monstrous Category 5 hurricane Monday.
Category 5 storms — capable of catastrophic damage — are extremely rare. Only three have hit the U.S. since 1935.

FIERCE HURRICANE DEAN HITS MEXICO
CHETUMAL, Mexico (Reuters) - Hurricane Dean slammed into Mexico's Caribbean coast on Tuesday, flooding streets, blowing the roofs off houses and battering resorts where tens of thousands of tourists and residents huddled in shelters.
Water surged down a main street at thigh level in Chetumal, a city of about 150,000 people near where Dean made landfall. Broken trees and street lights lay strewn around.
After killing 11 people on its rampage through the Caribbean, Dean was a Category 5 hurricane -- the strongest possible -- when it tore into Mexico, landing around the cruise ship port of Costa Maya, near the border with Belize.
But there were no immediate reports of casualties. Click for more...
HURRICANE DEAN REACHES MEXICO'S COAST
FELIPE CARRILLO PUERTO, Mexico: Hurricane Dean thrashed ashore on the Mexican coast early this morning, with battering rains and powerful winds raging up to 165 miles per hour.
The eye of the hurricane made landfall at around 4:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula near the tourist resort of Majahual, about 40 miles northeast of the regional capital Chetumal, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The hurricane struck Mexico at Category 5 level, with winds extending out for 60 miles, but within a few hours as it moved westward across land its force diminished and, with maximum wind speeds dropping to around 125 miles per hour, it was reassessed at Category 3.
Officials forecast that Dean would cross the Yucatán Peninsula Tuesday and reach the southern bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico late this afternoon.
