Cindy Martinez to represent Honduras at Costa Maya 2007!
Costa Maya is less than a month away. With much anticipation, San Pedro and Belize as well as the rest of the Mundo Maya countries are eagerly awaiting the opening night’s festivities.
As with every year, one of the biggest nights is the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant and with six countries vying for the title, walking away with the crown will be no easy feat. One lady up for the challenge is Miss Honduras, who we gladly present to you this week. Cindy Pamela Martinez is the 19-year-old charmer who will represent her country with grace and will fight to make Honduras proud.
The five foot seven inch belle is a first year student in the Business Administration field. This brown eyed beauty ambassador loves to read and hopes to not only take the crown and title but fall in love with Belize and its people. Read More

Daniela represents Nicaragua
Her name is Daniela Lacayo Sequeira, she is 25-years-old and is representing Nicaragua at this year’s Reina de la Costa Maya. The brown eyed and haired beauty has her degree in administration and enjoys reading, adventure tourism and going to the movies. A confessed adrenaline “junkie”, she boasts of the many extreme sports Nicaragua possess. Sports, that when time allows, Daniela loves to partake on.
Daniela strongly believes that pageants help people to grow as people and to help unions and friendships formed between countries. The Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant is one that she plans to fight and work hard in representing her Nicaragua. A country full of warmth and hospitality is her native land with Marina Puesta del Sol, located in Chinandega in Nicaragua, is her most favorite place. Daniela’s philosophy in life is that everything in life has its price and one has to work and fight hard to achieve their goal. And that is precisely what she has done to achieve her goals – fight for her dreams. The young beauty ambassador hopes that one day she will be the owner of her own business, a business within the tourism field. Read More

Sunday’s Health Fair promotes health awareness for San Pedro residents

Nurses were on hand to provide
free blood pressure tests.
More than one hundred people took advantage of the interactive Health Fair that was hosted by the Health Committee on Sunday, July 14th. The Fair which was held under the theme “Securing a healthy future for both mother and child” was the committee’s first initiative in bringing awareness and protection to mothers and their children.
Several agencies held booths and dispersed educational materials and referral services to visitors that stopped by. The San Pedro Aids Commission hosted a booth where visitors received free HIV/AIDS testing. Among the free information provided in form of pamphlets and brochures on the world wide epidemic, 39 individuals took advantage of the service and within 15 or 20 minutes they knew there results: all tests proved negative.
There was a free blood pressure and diabetes testing booth that provided referrals, pamphlets, and brochures which helped visitors to take care of themselves. The booth also encouraged women to maintain healthy habits and lifestyles and many of the women who visited the fair had children or were of child-bearing age.
The Maternal/Child Health and CARE Belize were other interesting booths that provided the public with plenty of factual information on child development, preventing pre-mature labor, pre-natal care, and assuring the public that if a case arises that Care Belize is here to help.
The Belize Family Life Association was on hand at the health fair and this booth provided information of the several types of birth control, how to protect yourself from STD’s, venereal diseases, breaking out, obesity, among others. The Cancer Society hosted a booth that provided not only information on breast cancer and its abnormalities, but information on receiving Pap smear and further female cancer symptoms. Information about breast self-exams, child health and safety issues, diabetes, heart health, elder care, nutrition, and obesity prevention were also available.
In an interview with Nurse Shawmella Kelly, health fairs like these encourages preventative health care. “Many women might not be aware of some of the issues that are affecting both mothers and children. These fairs benefit the community by sharing health and preventative care information. We offered several tests, including cholesterol screenings, blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing, body composition testing, among other things. And this is just the first of many activities that we plan on carrying out.”
; This is the first of many more health fairs that will be organized by the Health Committee. The next fair will be held on December 1st on World Aids Day. Nurse Shawmella also stressed that the purpose of the fair was to promote the services that are now available at the PolyClinic II in San Pedro and encourages the public to take advantage of these services. NOTICES/LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

TROPICAL DREAM
Jim Patterson
Who says that dreams can't come true? Probably more people than not! Mine has. It all began by accident. Always a water person, I had traveled extensively through the Caribbean; mostly the eastern Caribbean with its crowds and high prices. Then, in 1981, I was invited to Belize.....”Where the hell is Belize?” was my first response. My host laughed and explained that this was the new name for what had been British Honduras, and was located in the Western Caribbean, just south of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Not expecting much, it was much more than I ever expected.
At that time, the travel conditions were bad, the airstrip old and small, hotels were mostly thatched roof cabanas or clapboard buildings. This was just after Belize became an independent nation, yet still a protectorate of that fading world power. The politics were confusing, but basically the system was what we North Americans are accustomed to. Most everyone speaks English, with the lilt of the Caribbean, Spanish, and kriol, a local version of the former slaves who worked the land for their English masters. Most everyone speaks each language, usually during the same conversation. Most everyone is relaxed and happy. No stress here!  Read More
