BELIZE GAINS WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION IN PRISON REFORM
Belize has gained worldwide recognition in terms of prison reform. Chairman of the Kolbe Foundation, John Woods, recently returned home after representing Belize at a prison fellowship conference held in Canada. Love News spoke with Woods about the conference.
John Woods:Chairman of the Kolbe Foundation
“It was a prison fellowship international compilation that they held every four years and it had over 1300 delegates from 134 countries.Prison fellowship has a membership of 114 countries which I think number 112.But the big things about it is that we were highlighted the point of excellence worldwide in prison reform so that made it a big deal for Belize.I think it was in April, that a team from New Zealand they came, and I think they spent one week shooting footage in the prison and they interviews people. And they presented Belize on a video and I mean we absolutely stole the show.It pulled at everybody’s heartstrings and it showed real life and the years that we’ve had unbelievable presence of God’s work among the people that are there."
The Kolbe Foundation is a non for profit organization that manages the prison on behalf of the Government of Belize. Woods gives us a brief break-down of how the prison operates its finances.
John Woods:Chairman of the Kolbe Foundation
“The Kolbe Foundation, which is managing the prison on behalf of the government and we are totally non-profit but the government does pay the $6 US or the $12 BZ a day for every prisoner that we have in there.Out of that we spend about 65% in wages for the people that run it and the balance goes for food and support.” Read More

GOB's Plan for Free Textbooks for Primary School Students
These are the textbooks that Belize's 64,405 thousand primary school children will be using next year in five core subjects: Those subjects are math, language, science social studies and Spanish. Half a million books costing $6.5 million will be imported in eight 40 foot containers - with the first shipment scheduled to arrive next week. They were presented to a full house at a press conference at the House of Culture this morning.
Maud Hyde, Chief Education Officer
"We are confident that we're putting into the hands of our children good high quality material."
It's a huge policy decision and undertaking to standardize textbooks and it has attracted a fair amount of criticism. But the Ministry is undaunted; Chief Education Officer Maud Hyde says this is the right thing to do at the right time for the right reasons:
Maud Hyde,
"Through this initiative we anticipate that we will lower the rate of dropout because many children are out there on the street because they don't have materials to go to school. So this will lessen the burden for parents. Many parents have three, four, five children in primary school and are unable, if they are able to get one set of books, it is probably for the one in the highest class or the class nearest to PSE. So this initiative will lessen the burden for many many parents and I know despite all the, we have heard some negative remarks and so on, I am sure that many many parents are celebrating this initiative."
Hon. Francis Fonseca,
"There are a few who have suggested an intention not to have their schools or students participate in the textbook program. This is unwise, unreasonable, and unacceptable. I remain everyone that this is not an optional program. The Ministry will exercise every authority to ensure full compliance with the program's objectives."
And the Ministry is also strict about book lists. Many have appeared requiring that parents get a parallel list of supplementary textbooks.
Hon. Francis Fonseca,
"No student should be required by a school or a teacher to buy any other textbook, should be required to buy any other textbook in those core subject areas."
And to make sure school managements get the point, Hyde has sent out a circular making serious threats for those not complying with the programme directives.
Maud Hyde,
"Schools that act outside the policy will be subject to removal from grant aided status. Teachers that place undue financial burden on parents to purchase additional textbooks in the subject areas stipulated and use textbooks in the classroom that are not aligned with the national primary curriculum and approved by the Ministry of Education shall be subject to having their licenses revoked."
But schools aren't the only ones that will have to comply. Parents will be required to sign a contract committing to have their children take care of the books - because textbooks will be passed on to the next year. Each book will have one of these inside; your child's name will be written here along with the condition they received the book in.
It's quite a change in how things are done, and these experts say that the first year will see bumps along the way - not the least of which are likely to be experienced when the Ministry has to process and distribute half a million books across the country.
Starting at the middle of this month, the Ministry will hold training workshops for master teachers who will then lead mass workshops in August. And we should note that the Spanish books are part of an objective to have standard six finishers functionally competent in the Spanish language. Read More

Dr. Petters Teaching Students to Assemble Computers

More than one hundred Belizean students will spend the next week training in computer assembly and repair with guidance from world classes instructors. Duke University Professor Dr. Arlie Petters is back in Belize and this summer he has brought two top notch and hi-tech computer experts from Duke. We found more.
Keith Swift Reporting,
These are the parts of computer: you have the motherboard, the CD drive, memory card, and video cards. As unitary parts - they are basically useless. But by the end of the week - these will be put together in fully functioning computers - assembled by these teenagers.
Andrew Schretter, System Programmer - Duke University
"We hope to introduce them to computers, if they haven't had much exposure to them before, and also to show them what all the parts of the computer do and how they could assemble or repair computers on their own and basically maintain computers at home or start to work in the business of doing that."
Dr. Arlie Petters, PRI
"Children are the disseminators of technology and I think they are going to be the ones that will drive our future. I am imagining a Belize where we will have our own computer assembly plant. We are going to be processing the software for all the industries of our country. They are the ones that are going to do that for us."
Gen. Lloyd Gillett, BDF
"This is a first step to preparing them for the future work force. The future workplace is going to be innovation driven and a lot of the innovation is by computers these days. And so if they can understand how a computer works, from the inside, then they will be better able to use it when their time to enter the workplace comes."
The assembled computers will be donated to needy schools.
20 computers should be assembled by Friday. Some will go to the Muslim School and the remainder to a school in Arenal Village. On Wednesday the Petters Institute and the BDF will start their second annual intensive math training for BDF cadets interested in applying to U.S. military academies. Read More

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger
of being regarded as a loafer.
But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious
and enterprising citizen.
