  • An exemplary young Belizean:
    Eiden Salazar Jr.

If you take a moment to look around, or listen to the TV, many times the names of great leaders are the lead stories in the news. Important men and woman throughout the world devote a great deal of their lives to serve their community or country. San Pedro has also been blessed with great leaders who have sacrificed numerous personal hours and put them towards the betterment of our community. A young familiar face in San Pedro is that of Mr. Eiden Salazar Jr. who without a doubt can be categorized as one of the island’s most outstanding leaders.
Mr. Salazar lives a busy life, but still finds time to participate in something he enjoys doing and does very well - being a Master of Ceremonies. Eiden has livened up many town functions as MC whether it is the Costa Maya Festival, Miss San Pedro Pageant, Christmas Pageants or political rallies. In addition has also been involved in diverse committees like the Product Development Committee, Chairman of the Costa Maya Festival, Chairman of the Liquor Licensing Board and many others. Whatever committee, he serves with dignity and to the best of his ability.
As if this is not enough, Eiden came up with another bright idea to promote the island where he was born. He was looking for a way of advertising San Pedro on a national level, to encourage Belizeans to visit “La Isla Bonita” and be tourists in their own country. The solution – Radio Arecife - The Reef Radio. Mr. Salazar made history introducing the first radio station in San Pedro Town. He has made careful studies with regards to the operations of the station and applied for his license. San Pedro witnessed history when the bilingual station featuring music, entertainment, sports, social and educational programs was born. Reef Radio has skyrocketed since its inception and people from all over the world can listen live through their website now.
Eiden also returned to the love of teaching and now teaches at Isla Bonita Elementary in the subjects of Math and Social Studies. Eiden’s hard work and dedication has won him many awards and certificates of appreciation from San Pedro High School, the Ministry of Youth Development, St. Peter’s College, Belize Youth Movement, Pride Belize and the San Pedro Lions Club and is currently Chairman of the San Pedro Lots Committee and the San Pedro People’s United Party. He was also given the prestigious opportunity to address the graduating class of 1998 of San Pedro High School during their commencement exercises and the ground breaking ceremonies of the Auditorium/Civic Center for the San Pedro High School.
Eiden Salazar Jr. has proven himself in all that he had done. As a teacher he was an exemplary educator, a wonderful role model, a great leader and an overall outgoing person. Eiden Salazar has gained our admiration and respect and has paved the way for young Belizeans to follow in his footsteps within “Our Belize Community.” Read More

    VISION BY AUNT GRACE COLEMAN
    Tips for Times of Crisis
Now that the hurricane season is upon us let us take nothing for granted. Try your best to go to a hurricane shelter that is located 7 or 8 feet off the ground. A low shelter is nothing but a trap.
When a hurricane comes it brings water and rip tides. If such a strong hurricane comes it could flood the City with water that is 6, 7 or 8 feet high. Remember this; stock up on medication, food, flash lights, extra batteries and radio batteries.
Don’t go to any remote area where you and your teenage children could be vulnerable. If your child has diabetes make sure you have enough medication. You will need Bayer aspirin and alcohol in your medication kit. Pack some garbage bags with you. And make sure you don’t run out of water and food. Take at least 2-5 gallons of water for a family of 6. You may be trap in one place for many days.
It’s good to keep these things in mind when a hurricane threatens Belize. You’re your responsibility to take care of yourself and your family. If you don’t have the right things you can perish.
If you live in a two-flat cement building, then board up all the windows and doors downstairs and upstairs. It’s extremely important, because if the winds get into the downstairs it can begin to crack the cement and loosen the foundation. Water will come in but the water is heavy so it won’t do as much damage as the wind. If you have a strong cement home it is best you stay at home. But make sure your house insurance is updated.
People living in front of the sea, in areas such as Bella Vista, Button Wood Bay, Foreshore, Belama Phase 1, 2, 3 or 4 or wherever there is a river running through your neighborhood, you need to take heed. Regardless of how large and strong your cement structure may be, even if the house is built on piles, and the fence is high take nothing for granted. You are below sea level. When the rip tides go out and come in and loosen the foundation of the earth under your home, it can take out the whole area. Where there are beautiful homes right now can turn out to be a bed of sea.
Get out of your comfort zone and head for high land. Be wise. You only have one life, hang on to it. I must remind you to make sure you have life jackets, medications, water and food.
Make sure you save some of your none-dairy powder milk jars. You’ll need at least eight empty ones. Most people need to urinate every minute, and in your shelter the bathroom is always busy. If every member of your family has a sealed bottle they can use it to urinate. But keep the bottle tightly closed. Then you don’t have to worry about moving around to find the bath room. You would think that I am just being funny. But I’m serious. You will find this idea so useful in time of need, in the midst of a violent hurricane.
If a member of your family gets sick and needs to throw up, you can also use the bottle. You should have one empty sealed plastic milk bottle for every one bag. This is called a portable toilet, created for a crisis situation.
Keep on smiling I won’t mind. I hope we do not have any hurricane this year but if we do, and we live to see the sun shine again tell me how grateful you are for your portable toilet, and all of the tips above. Read More
