San Pedranos
to march against violence
Last week we reported the alleged abuse
of a Holy Cross Anglican
Primary School teacher in San Pedro by her ex-common law husband,
police officer Mark Martinez. Reports at the time said that the
situation worsened when two of the administrators of the school,
missionaries Vernon and Francis Wilson, tried to rescue her. According
to the Wilsons—who went by taxi to offer assistance—officer Martinez
jumped in the cab and also had an altercation with them. Today, more
than a week after the incident, the issue is still steaming for
residents of the town. Vernon Wilson says the bruises may have started
to disappear but the memory hasn’t faded as yet and has, instead,
prompted schools on the island to join in a peace march on Wednesday.
Voice of: Vernon Wilson, Director, Holy Cross “We both were wounded by him. He tried to break my thumb. My wife’s got numerous bruises all over her body from where he slammed her around inside of the van.” Jose Sanchez “And you and your wife were charged?” Voice of Vernon Wilson “Both my wife and myself were charged with destruction of property because I tore his t-shirt while trying to restrain him from beating my wife and my wife was charged for wounding because she scratched him on the arm when he attacked her. Tomorrow morning at nine am we are doing a peaceful March, and demonstration at the central park. We will be marching around the town and culminating back at central park where we will be discussing abuse—family abuse, domestic abuse sit downs. We have copies of laws that were done in 2007 to protect abuse victims both women and men. And we will be discussing those at the park letting people know what their rights are and what options they have in case they run into the situation like my wife and I did—we were arrested for trying to protect someone from being injured by someone else.” Jose Sanchez “All the schools are going to be involved?” Voice of Vernon Wilson “We had sent out invitations to all the schools and so far the response has been very positive.” Officer Martinez is reportedly on interdiction. Wilson says that he and his wife will get their day in court on June twenty second. CH5 PROJECT CURE DONATES MEDICAL
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT TO BELIZE
This
morning a donation was handed over to the Ministry of Health along with
Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Management by the project CURE
organization. The donation which includes
two
million dollars worth of medical supplies was made possible by First
Lady Kim Simplis Barrow through the International First Ladies Club.
Simplis told Love News, the medical supplies will be distributed to
health facilities in the Central, Western and Southern Health Regions
of the country.
Kim Simplis Barrow “We are officially handing over to the KHMH the equipment donated by Project Cure. Project Cure extended an invitation to me last year to do a presentation at their third First Ladies Luncheon. They distribute medical equipment to countries that need specific equipment. Each hospital puts together a list of equipment that they need so each hospital got what they asked for. The KHMH is getting equipment that they will be using, it is not equipment that will just sit there or equipment that is not in usable condition. In the next couple weeks the Western Regional Hospital delivery will be made and again it was made on a specific list that they requested. We always hear about the different needs of the hospital. It is good to be able to help the hospital and the patients by providing this equipment.” Chief Executive Officer of Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Gary Longsworth told Love news the medical supplies and equipment received today are certainly necessary for the tertiary care service at the KHMH. Gary Longsworth; CEO, KHMH “On of the more important pieces of equipment is full Laparoscopic set; this will enable us the increase the range of surgical services that we offer in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology. We got other types of equipment as well such as intensive care supplies and anesthesia supplies. It was quite a large donation and we will be able to start doing things that we were not able to do before. “ Project CARE is a registered trademark of the Benevolent Healthcare Foundation and also a non profit humanitarian relief organization that delivers medical supplies, equipment and services to medical professionals. Love FM President of Taiwan
arrives in Belize with 210-member entourage
Oscar Ramjeet
The President of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, and
his wife, Chow Mei-ching,
are leading a 210-member entourage to Belize via private aircraft on
Wednesday, officials of the Embassy of Taiwan in Belize.
The Embassy of Taiwan in Belize's Second Secretary Douglas Chang and other senior officials met with Belize Press Office director Seth Hernandez to brief the Belize media. According to Amandala media on Tuesday, Chang disclosed that 40 government officials and over 40 journalists from the public and sectors are on the list of delegates. Apart from them, sixteen performers from Ju Percussion Group will accompany the distinguished party. Reports from Belize state that, even though the Ju team will bring the flamboyance of Taiwan's dance, music and drama, the highlight of the visit will be the signing of a technical co-operation agreement between Belize and Taiwan, and the groundbreaking for the Information and Communications Technology Centre on Mountain View Boulevard in Belmopan. Amandala reported that, despite the fact that Taiwan's state-owned company, Chinese Petroleum Corporation (CPC), has a substantial oil exploration concession for offshore Belize, officials from the Embassy and the Belize Press Office claimed, when asked, that oil is not on the agenda. There are 1,000 Taiwanese living in Belize and President Ma will host a dinner for the Taiwanese community at the Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City. President Ma will pay a courtesy call on the Governor General Sir Colville Young before he proceeds to the National Assembly Building for a ceremonial joint Sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate. President Ma, who is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the same university attended by US President Barack Obama, is fluent in English. On Thursday afternoon, the technical co-operation agreement will be signed and ground broken for the ICT Centre, after which Ma heads back to the Belize City for a state dinner. Before serving of the evening meal, he and Prime Minister Barrow will exchange top national honours. Ma receives the Order of Belize while Barrow receives the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon. After Belize's visit President Ma will go to Guatemala and on Monday June 1 he will travel to El Salvador for the inauguration of that country's new president, Mauricio Funes. I
am
interested in letting you know someone has cut 2 large mangroves down
that are located between Belize Legacy and the Blue Reef Resort. I
don't
know who is doing this but, I feel the public and the authorities need
to be
made aware of this situation. There are several more large mangroves in
the
area and I am concerned they will be destroyed as well. Isn't it
illegal to
cut mangroves?? A Concerned citizen. The San Pedro Town Council informs the public in general that effective Monday, May 25th maintenance work will commence at Boca del Rio Bridge.
