Sarteneja launches
largest wood sailboat A group of
25 people from
Minnesota gathered in the local fishing village of Sarteneja, Belize
last
Friday to step back in time for a traditional boat launch.
![]() The Minnesotan’s commented on the ingenuity of the locals and loved being part of the entire experience. It was hard to believe that such a mammoth boat could be moved without any damage. But Beto kept things moving along with the confidence that only someone with years of experience in such matters has. Everyone worked together, enjoying the shared purpose. It was a real version of “it takes a village” to get things done. FIRE SAN PEDRO
An early morning fire in San Pedro town
partially
destroyed the San Pedro Lion’s Den. Though the fire was quickly
brought under control, fire official in charge of the San Pedro Fire
Department, Jerome Garcia, says he thinks the fire was as a result of
neglect.
Jerome Garcia, San Pedro Fire Service “Yes when we got there we saw smoke and fire coming out of the most northern part of the building. The building is made out of wood with plywood in the upper floor and since the fire was from there we had to make a force entry through the rear door and there we saw the fire. We then attacked the fire and brought it under control in some ten minutes or so. The damage to the building is in the interior and caused by both fire and water. In my opinion the estimated damage to the building is about 30% and the cause of the fire may be caused by an electric fan; a fan that was left plugged in and over heated and started the fire” Garcia said that the fire department is trying to locate the individuals responsible for the building to determine if the building was insured. ; For the past month a total of three fires have been reported in that municipality. Garcia asks residents to be very responsible. Jerome Garcia, San Pedro Fire Service “Well most of the fires is because of negligence because of a fire left on or fuel supply line that goes from the tank to the stove is made out of plastic. These are the calls most people are calling in with so people need to be careful. Also we have noticed some electrical problems since some houses have hanging wires that needs to be upgraded.” The building is located on Barrier Reef Drive. The building is being used as a multi purpose facility. Read More PUC Invites
Submissions from Public
on BEL Request for Rate Increase As we told you last night the Belize
Electricity Limited is
asking the Public Utlities Commission for a 13.4% average increase in
rates. If you oppose the request, you have until April 22nd to tell the
PUC. The request is part of what is called the annual tariff proceeding
– “ARP” for short – and unlike the TERP – the Threshold Event Review
Application, which was just rejected, this one takes this one takes
months to conclude because it is a far more involved process. This
morning at a press conference - PUC staffers said your comments are
important because the Commission is there to protect the consumer from
the utility company.
E. Victor Lewis, PUC “We are doing ARP. We have a longer term to interrogate and we are saying, let’s put all the valuables on the table, let’s evaluate those. If you deserve a raise we will recommend one. If you do not deserve a raise, we will recommend another pattern of behavior. The buck stops at the consumer. The consumer picks up all the bills, that is the deal. There is no other deal. The most the PUC can do is to make sure that BEL is efficient and that those bills are the lowest possible. That is what the PUC is after.” Roberto Young, Chairman – PUC “The legislation tells you that you must take in hand the concerns of the consumer. The legislation tells you that, dictates to you. He is upfront here. He is up front here.” Again that date for submission is April 22nd.you can fax your comments to 223-6818 or email them to info@puc.bz or you can also send it in writing to 41 Gabourel Lane, P.O. Box 300 in Belize City. After comments are received, the PUC will issue its initial decision by May 2nd. Read More NOTICES
