Movie Theatre on Island
The large building rising up from across the
bridge on North Ambergris,
with its impressive facade makes for some speculations that a
movie
theatre is being built in San Pedro. Just the front design of the
building has the look of a movie theatre and many have asked Ambergris
Today to find out what is the deal with that impressive building across
the cut.
![]() We poked around a bit and it was not hard to
find out that the building
is indeed a movie theatre that is being built at the Reef Village
compound just across the bridge. One can clearly notice the building
without having to cross the bridge. We don’t have full details about
the movie theatre, except that it is a similar complex to that of the
theatre in Belize City and Chetumal with a large movie screen, with
plans of opening soon. Ambergris Today
Rumor
New Airline to Open in San Pedro Rumors started running around town that a
new airline was starting
operations in San Pedro after folks stated seeing the construction of a
new hangar across the airstrip on the west side. Speculations quickly
arose as to who was going to give local airline Tropic Air and Maya
Island Air some competition.
![]() Ambergris Today did some quick
investigations and found out that there
was no new airline company opening its doors to San Pedro, but that the
hangar is privately owned by a local businessman who plans to bring his
aircraft to San Pedro. No, it’s not Mr. Bowen! That, we will let you
find out on your own. Ambergris Today
Belize on list of 10 best
ethical
destinations
Adele Ramos After being dropped from the
list
in 2008, Belize has again landed a spot for the second time in three
years, on the list of the world’s top 10 ethical destinations,
according to a report released on December 3 by Ethical Traveler, an
international alliance of travelers headquartered in Berkeley,
California, USA, and headed by Jeff Greenwald, world traveler, writer,
artist and photographer.
In alphabetical order, the best ethical travel destinations for 2010 are: Argentina, Belize, Chile, Ghana, Lithuania, Namibia, Poland, Seychelles, South Africa, and Suriname. According to its website, www.ethicaltraveler.org, Every year Ethical Traveler conducts a study of the world’s developing nations, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. We begin our research by focusing on three general categories: Environmental Protection, Social Welfare, and Human Rights. For each of these categories, we look at information past and present, so that we may understand not only the current state of a country, but its forward path. Christy Hoover, co-author of the report, explained, In drafting our report, we use scores of information sources including publicly available data to rate each country’s genuine commitment to environmental protection, social welfare and human rights. As an example, the report notes that in the area of political rights, Freedom House gave Belize, Chile, Ghana, Lithuania, and Poland the highest possible rating. Other data sources include the United Nations Development Program, Human Rights Watch, Columbia University, Reporters Without Borders, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. There’s no doubt that worldwide interest in mindful, responsible travel is growing -- not only among travelers, but within the countries that host us, says Greenwald, executive director of Ethical Traveler and co-author of the report. Now is the perfect time for savvy travelers and well-intentioned governments to evolve together, each encouraging the other. This is especially true in the developing world, where travel and tourism can be developed as lucrative, low-impact alternatives to forestry, mining, and the destruction of ocean habitats. Belize last made the list in 2006, when it appeared along with Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, Kenya, Peru, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Uruguay. Ethical Traveler, a project of Earth Island Institute, says it seeks to harness the political and economic clout of tourism to support human rights and the environment. Amandala Longsworths sing
KHMH praises
Gary Ayuso Despite
the thousands of people that are helped year round at the Karl Heusner
Memorial Hospital, its accomplishments hardly ever go noticed. But this
time around, Pastor Howell Longsworth is singing its praises.
As it turns out, his wife Gladys Longsworth was diagnosed with Lymphodema at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida five years ago. As the years passed the muscle in her leg grew and hardened. It eventually grew to measure 28 inches wide. It became a problem, explained
Longsworth, as regular activity became burdensome.
With this in mind, the Longsworths decided it was time for a checkup and second opionion. This they got from Dr. Mungilla, a Surgeon at the KHMH. Dr. Mungilla diagnosed her condition to be Lymphoma, a condition which is a cancer that begins in the lymphocytes of the immune system and presents itself as a solid tumor. Known for her Christianity and strong faith in God, Gladys prayed and was confident that Mungilla was the doctor for her and that the operation would be done at the Karl Heusner. The biopsy proved the tumor benign and the operation was set for December 10. The high risk operation lasted 4 1/2 hours. Dr. Mungilla carved out two connected tumors from her leg - one in the front and the other at the back of the leg. In all 2 pounds of tumored cells were extracted. Pastor Longsworth believes his wife’s recovery was a miracle - possible only because of the excellent service done by Dr. Mungilla. The operation was a high risk one. He got it done. He cut everything from the root... Thanks to him my wife is well. It’s a miracle. One day later Gladys was up and walking. Everyone at the hospital was surprised to see her quick recovery. My wife has amazing faith, said Pastor Longsworth, She knew that Doctor Mungilla would make the surgery and that she would recover fully. While faith, prayers and confidence go a long way, the Longsworths give Dr. Mungilla and the KHMH plenty of thanks and praise for the excellent health care provided to them during their stay. When the hospital does well we must say it, said Longsworth. Too many times we hear of the bad things, of the negative things. We want people to know that our hospital can do good things too. Reporter NOTICES &
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The
Sedi Elrington Controversy
Dear Editor, Although I am totally against these Guatemala-Belize talks and find them "Masochistic" To us as a sovereign people and country, I would like to weigh in on Mr. Elrington's comments. By not being concise he opened up a Pandora"s box and left room for interpretations, not only infuriating his people but sending the wrong message to the OAS in such a serious matter which could greatly compromise our position and cause irrevocable damage if it reaches the ICJ. This in my opinion makes him not competent for the tough job at hand. Make "No Mistake about It" Sedi you are swimming with "Great Whites" disguised as Dolphins and they are experts in the art of swaying you over. Ingratiation is their forte. They will wine you, dine you, praise you, befriend you, work on your Emotional Quotient and pretty soon you are SEEING their SIDE. A nice Belizean man like you is no match for these guys. You need to be the man I know you can be and apologize to the Belizean People for your inadvertent mistake and remove yourself from this game as you are simply not cut out for it. A smart man knows his limitations! Words are extremely powerful and this Guatemalan contingent knows this fact. This is not a one man show. The Guatemalans get all the professional linguistic support and assessment from their best advisers before any press release is given. Their T's are carefully crossed and their I's are strategically dotted. Every word is carefully constructed, exacting and deliberate. This is the Big Leagues.. And this is why our Government needs to immediately make a press release clarifying Belize's position as a people in reviving that old Belizean slogan "WE NO WAH NO GUATEMALA"! Our Belizean Contingent must therefore NOT lose sight of the FACT that these people want to take our country away from us and as such they are the ENEMY! This is not a social club; this is a Defining Endeavour being embarked upon, possibly ending who we are as a people and a country. Who we were and who we are to be, our history, our hopes, our children's hopes and dreams. Not to be taken likely..This Issue is BIGGER than all of you Collectively..for I can tell you with Certainty."YOU DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME AND MY FAMILY!" I certainly don't believe you should loose your job however, instead put in an area where you can better serve your country. Respectfully Charles Payne
